It wasn’t the best day to be outside – the day the hot, fine weather broke and it chucked it down – but Wood End residents were still happy to sit and chat with us over tea and cake when we took The Cart to Moat House Leisure and Neighbourhood Centre.
We heard about fields, collieries, playgrounds, re-directed canals, friendly bonfire-building rivalries, social housing and re-development – but most of all, despite the changes and the uncertainties about the future – a massive sense of pride in the neighbourhood: of belonging, and of a huge and much-cherished community spirit.
We heard about how this community copes with the pressure of the oft-repeated outsiders’ perception that the place they love is a bad place to live.
And we considered what part cultural activity can play in re-writing that story…
The Cart was at Moat House Leisure and Neighbourhood Centre on 11th July 2017. The guest artists were Daisy Oppon, Martin Ratcliffe and Vanessa Oakes.
